Baker 13 - Halloween

You are visitor number:

Hey Baker!!! Remember the Baker 13 Halloween Run on October 31 2000? I was supposed to be the official photographer this night. But as you all know, everyone who takes a picture of Baker 13 Runners is a pervert, so now I am the official Baker Pervert!
Anyway, here are the pictures:

Thank you very much, youīre IP-Address has been tracked and you will be reported to the FBI, so expect an official person to pick you up for your trial soon...

you PERVERT!!!

Ok, now serious: After I took all those 120 photos of the run, I was wondering wether to publish them on the web, or not... After all, some people who ran could run into trouble by having their pictures on the web. (What if YOU want to run for president in 20 years and someone finds these naked pictures of you still on the web???) And would you want some Highschool Kid to touch himself, while he is looking at your picture??? But on the other hand, photos are memories, and everyone wants to look back and say: "Look, my (son/daughter), this was me when I was a wild college kid..."
So I decided not to take this decision on my own, but to let all the Bakerites pariticipate. So I wrote out this email to the Bakerite Mailinglist:

Hey Baker!!!
I am in kind of a ethical problem. I have the pictures here of Baker 13 an I still do not know, wethere or not to publish them on the web. It could be embarrasing to some people. But on the other hand, I want to give everyone who participated the chance to see himself...
So, as this is the oldest running democratic nation, lets do it the unfair, aeh, fair way (Because since Tuesday (election day for president) I know, that democracy always works in the USA).

So, send me your opinions, if I shall put up a website, or not.
Ciao
Udo

And my call was heared. I got a lot of replies, about 48. And because this hole thing was supposed to be discussed and decided in public, here are some sample opinions:

  • I say who cares if there's nudity. Even if some frontal nudity exists as opposed to the sidal variety, isn't that what Rice is all about?!?!

  • can i check out the pics? i don't mind if you put up a website- as long as there are no embarssing pics of me!

  • yes, yes, yes dear god yes

  • I didn't run, but the way I see it, if people didn't mind running around campus naked, with plenty of people watching, why would they mind this? I also just wanted to compliment you on your shot on democracy, I approve.

  • sure, post them. After all, these people already ran around naked

  • I don't think you should put them on a web site. You should just email the pictures to people who ask you for them

  • I want to see pictures of naked people! (And this was from a girl...)

  • put the pictures on the web, and you will hear from my lawyer...

  • definitely post them!

  • I personally have no problem with having the pictures on the internet

  • Udo, if I were you I would definitely NOT put those pictures on the internet. There could definitely be some legal repercussions for putting naked pictures of people on the internet without the signed permission of ALL participating members, you know what I mean? Just some advice.

  • As one of the 13 runners, I would prefer if you did not post the pictures up for all members of the general public to gawk at...

  • Well, I didn't run Baker 13, but I wouldn't mind seeing pictures of all my friends naked, HA HA HA!!!

  • It's cool that you want to give people the option to see themselves but I don't think putting it on the web is a good idea simply because some people may be worried that their pictures are gonna end up appearing on other websites that they don't know about. It may seem a little paranoid, but these things do happen and we hear stories about them all the time too. I wouldn't mine taking a look at them in your room though, but I donn't think you'd want all 140 people to come to your room at once to see the pictures...

  • what about emailing the pics to the participants?

  • If you put up those pictures, you will find that it's not just democracy, but the fear of lawsuit, that runs this country. Even if ninety-nine of one hundred people tell you to do it, the one who does not could sue. Please, the only thing that porn sites probably can't get enough of is pictures of college people in the buff. There's got to be someone unscrupulous enough to reprint this if it goes on the web, even if the baker server is firewalled (which I doubt), so please don't do so.

  • Yeah, i think you should post the pictures. I think if you ran and didn't want to be seen naked then you shouldn't have run.

  • Udo, always remember that the US are the land of lawsuits as well...

  • no, do not put them on a web site!

  • I say yes. Don't go publishing the URL places, though. It should be by request only. That way, perves the world over don't gaze. If people running e-mail you and say they don't want it, remove pictures with them in it.

  • I guess you know how I feel... WEBSITE ALL THE WAY!!!

  • I want to see them so if anything, send them to me... afterall when I did 13, they put it in the thresher, so I don't think this would be as bad...

  • yes udo...put them up but with a password....only give it to those who ask for it...

So you see, the opinions vary.

Some people did not want their pictures to be accessible to everyone on this planet. So no public website. Then I thought about making a password protected site and only giving the pasword to runners. But how am I supposed to know, who ran and who did not? Despite of that, it would still be possible for everyone to just copy all the images down and mail them around or set up his own litte website...

Next idea was to mail the pictures to the people. But then again: How am I supposed to know whom to mail it to and whom not? And again: Everyone could then destribute them on...

Next idea was to do a presentation in my room. I liked that idea, but 140 people in my room, I donīt know... So I thought about a presentation in the commons with a projector. But who would be alowed to see it and who not?

Then I thought about "disarming" the pictures by adding "artificial shaving cream" and making peoples faces unrecognizable. But as you can see from the picture above, then it is not worth looking at the picture at all. (Besides, the photos are much better quality and resolution, I just chopped it down so that loading time would be too long...)

Conclusion:

So, I finally decided just to throw the pictures away. After all, I do not want to run into any trouble and exspecially I donīt want anyone to be mad at me.
It is a shame, because running around with 4 packs of batteries and 3 memory cards around Rice campus and outing myself as the official Baker Pervert was for nothing, but thatīs the way it is.
Anyway: I am looking forward to the next big Baker Event, when I can put up funny pictures of you all again

Oh, and by the way: This goes out to all the High-School Boys: Sorry for not giving you access to the photos of all those hot and wild college chicks...
